PREP NOTEBOOK: Area football stars in for a Surprise

Joey Davis hasn't played his final football game after all.

The Santa Fe High School senior is one of four All-Area players selected to play in the Arizona vs. SoCal football game, scheduled for June 23 at 7 p.m. in Surprise, Ariz.

Also selected to represent Southern California, which will include players from the CIF's Southern, Los Angeles City and San Diego sections, are Santa Fe's Christian Mahlstede and St. Paul's Tyler Carrillo and Paul Governale. Former St. Paul coach Marijon Ancich will be an assistant coach.

Davis, a two-time national champion wrestler who recently signed to play for Notre Dame College, of Ohio, was first-team All-Area and Del Rio League co-MVP with Mahlstede, who was also first-team All-Area.

The duo helped Santa Fe win the Del Rio League championship.

Carrillo and Governale were also All-Area selections, with Carrillo earning first-team honors and Governale making the second team.

The game is being played at Surprise Stadium, which is the spring training home of the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals.
